About the Scandinavian mythology

Scandinavian mythology comprises Norse mythology or religion, myths and legends of pre-Christian Scandinavian population and Iceland. Norse mythology is the branch of Germanic mythology which has been preserved best and is related very much Anglo-Saxon mythology.

Norse mythology can be defined as a collection of myths faiths and northern Germanic tribes. Religion was not a Scandinavian revealing, because it was established that a mortal gods given him the truth (though mortals often come in contact with the gods and learn their stories). It also does not include a Nordic religion sacred text or holy book. Nordic myths were transmitted orally in the form of poems. Oral transmission was continued in Viking, our knowledge of Norse mythology relying most on Edde and other medieval texts written only after the Christianization of the Scandinavian population.

In Scandinavian folklore, ancient pagan beliefs have survived and some have been preserved until today in rural areas. Others have been revived or invented by German neo-pagan. Norse mythology also remains a source of inspiration in literature, stage productions and movies.
